WATER-REPELLENT vs WATERPROOF vs WATER-RESISTANT - what’s the difference?
Water-repellent items (sometimes misspelt water-repellant), are not easily penetrated by water, as a result of being treated for such a purpose with a surface coating . Water-repellent items are breathable, which make them perfect for outdoor activities. Many Nat Geo Wear Water repellent items also feature waterproof zips and pockets, to keep belongings and valuables dry. Products with DWR (Durable Water Repellency) can withstand rain or water for some time, but are not waterproof, and will let in some water when worn during heavy downpours or snow.
Waterproof: items are impervious to water. Suitable for downpours and snow, these items are also windproof, as they have very little breathability (wind cannot penetrate).
Water-resistant (sometimes spelt water-resistent): these items are able to resist the penetration of water to some degree, but not entirely, due to the tight weave of the fabric - suitable for light rain only.
